FAQs
I am a new staff/faculty member or am expecting a new staff/faculty member. What do I do?
Welcome to JSOM! We ask to be given at least three weeks’ notice in advance of a new faculty or staff member’s arrival so that we can purchase the appropriate equipment and have it ready to go when that person starts. Our computer options for staff and faculty differ as follows:
- Staff members are provided with one desktop tower. Laptops are provided only for valid work-related reasons and/or with the approval of their supervisor.
- Faculty members are provided one desktop tower and one laptop. This is interchangeable in many cases (two laptops, etc.).
I am a staff/faculty member and want a new computer. How do I go about doing that?
We can replace your machine if it fulfills these condition(s):
- It has been in your custody for three years, something that can be verified by contacting us.
- It was damaged or has stopped working due to age (after verification by our techs).
Please be aware that your device is purchased with a three year warranty. If it gets damaged, we will provide you with a replacement per the warranty. During the period where you are awaiting a replacement device, we will provide you with a temporary laptop.
I need a ________ software. What do I do?
We provide Microsoft Office 2016 and Adobe Acrobat DC on all of our UT Dallas-owned machines
- OIT (The campus IT group) offers a variety of software:
- Adobe Creative Cloud
- CrashPlan
- Mathematica
- Matlab
- Microsoft Imagine
- Office 365
- Software that costs money? You will need to speak with your administrative assistant. We can help with the installation.
All staff and faculty should have administrator access to their computers and therefore should be able to install their own software. If you do not have admin access, please contact us.
I am having issues with one of your servers. What do I do?
JSOM TFS manages several in-house servers that are used for a variety of things. If you send us an email at jsomtfs@utdallas.edu with the server address, and the exact issue you are having, we can assist you. If it happens to be a non-JSOM server, we can direct you to the appropriate group.
My account is locked. What can I do?
If your UT Dallas account is locked (that is, you are unable to login to your desktop or you are getting lockout prompts in Outlook), you will need to contact the UT Dallas Help Desk. They manage the UT Dallas accounts, including password resets, and AD lockouts. You can call them at 972-883-2911, or email them at assist@utdallas.edu.
My office printer is out of toner. What do I do?
Please come by our office in JSOM 2.301 and we can provide you with the appropriate toner. We do require you to sign for it.
I’m having some problems on my personal laptop or desktop. Can you help me with that?
Although we do not support personal machines, we are more than happy to take a look or direct you to some possible resources. If it is a simple issue like printing, or WiFi we can take a look. We do this on a case-by- case basis.
I am a staff/faculty member who wants to print to the copiers on my respective floor. How do I get that access?
First and foremost, please email us here at jsomtfs@utdallas.edu with a request for a copy code. We would appreciate it if you would also add your office number in the email for fast reference. Once the code has been granted, we can come by your office to assist you in adding the respective copiers to your machine.
What is the difference between you and the UT Dallas Help Desk?
We at JSOM TFS are here to assist you, the staff and faculty of JSOM. We manage our in-house resources, including your computers. The UT Dallas Help Desk is more of a general IT help desk and offers assistance on UT Dallas resources, such as your UT Dallas account. In addition, it caters primarily to students. We recommend you call us first if you are unsure, and we can direct you to the correct people.
