JSOM TFS – Deskside Support Scope of Service Policies

Support Tier

Full Support

The highest level of support provided by JSOM TFS. This level is reserved for computing equipment purchased by JSOM TFS that adheres to the recommendations provided by JSOM TFS and that is compliant with University policies (for example, full-disk encryption, domain-joined).

Partial Support

Support will be provided for some computing devices and operating systems that are not widely used but are sometimes necessary for work or preferred by staff. JSOM TFS will assist in ensuring basic operation of the device and will attempt to resolve issues, but as expertise within JSOM TFS may vary on this category, additional time and research may be necessary to resolve problems.

Basic Support

No expertise is maintained for these operating systems, applications or devices. JSOM TFS will provide a “best-effort” attempt at resolving problems, generally limited to locating online resources or vendor contact information.

No Support

JSOM TFS does not support these operating systems, applications, or devices.


Hardware Tiers

Full Support – Hardware

(All devices must be domain-joined and full-disk encrypted and backed by Dell ProSupport, which lasts three years from the date of purchase, and purchased by JSOM TFS)

Dell OptiPlex Desktop computers
Dell Latitude Laptop computers

Partial Support – Hardware

(All devices must be domain-joined and full-disk encrypted and backed by Dell ProSupport, which lasts three years from the date of purchase, and purchased by JSOM TFS)

  • All other Dell desktop and laptop computers (for example., Precision, XPS), excluding Inspiron

Non-Dell Windows PC devices purchased by our department, including vendors such as:

  • Lenovo
  • HP
  • Toshiba

Apple Macintosh desktop and laptop computers (not required to be domain-joined)

Office printers purchased by JSOM TFS

Smartphones running current versions of iOS, Android or Blackberry (configuration of Wi-Fi and UTD email only)

Basic Support – Hardware

All devices listed above that are not compliant with University policies (domain-joined and full-disk encrypted)

Dell Inspiron computers

Custom-built desktops not listed above

No Support – Hardware

Personal devices (excluding partial support provided to smartphones listed above)

Computers not purchased through JSOM TFS

Remote support for home office equipment

Full Support – Software

Site-licensed copies of MS Office 365

Partial Support – Software

Other site-licensed applications such as:

  • Adobe Suite
  • Box
  • MS Office 2013 (JSOM TFS strongly encourages upgrading to Office 2016)
  • Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan
  • Mac OS X 10.12 Sierra
  • Current versions of:
    • Mozilla Firefox
    • Google Chrome
    • Apple Safari

Basic Support – Software

Office 2010 (JSOM TFS strongly encourages upgrading to Office 2016)

Installation-only support is provided for the majority of applications that staff and faculty may need for business purposes, including but not limited to:

  • Mathematica (provided by JSOM TFS upon request)
  • Matlab (provided by JSOM TFS upon request)
  • SDC Platinum

All other applications listed below NOT provided by JSOM TFS:

  • Stata
  • SAS
  • Maple
  • Data Analysis Plus plugin on Excel 2013-2016

No Support – Software

Versions of Windows older than Windows 7
OS X versions older than 10.11 El Capitan
Linux

Non-standard software, media software (for example, Spotify, iTunes), software not used for business purposes, and all other applications/operating systems not specified above


Equipment Purchased by JSOM TFS*

Faculty

(Laptop and desktop are eligible for replacement, at faculty’s request, every three years)

  • One laptop selected from list of pre-configured options provided by JSOM TFS
  • One desktop selected from list of pre-configured options provided by JSOM TFS
  • Two 22-inch or 24-inch Dell monitors
  • One office printer (HP LaserJet m402dn or HP OfficeJet 8710)
  • Low-cost, incidental technology equipment (wireless mice/keyboards, if needed, on case-by-case basis)

Staff

  • One desktop selected from list of pre-configured options provided by JSOM TFS (staff whose job requires a significant percentage of travel and remote work can request a laptop, to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis)
  • Two 22-inch Dell monitors
  • One office printer (HP Laserjet m402dn or HP OfficeJet 8710)

Full-time PhD Students

  • One desktop configured by JSOM TFS, purchased before arrival
  • One 22-inch monitor (a smaller, used second monitor can be supplied once upon request by JSOM TFS on a first-come, first-served basis, and as surplus stock allows)

Note:

* JSOM TFS does NOT purchase:

  • Individually licensed software not covered by UT Dallas site license agreement with the software vendor.
  • Equipment intended to be used at staff or faculty home office (other than one laptop, if eligible).
  • Equipment not specified in lists above (please feel free to inquire by emailing JSOMTFS@utdallas.edu with any specific questions).
